Goal: Loose 45 lbs
Result: Lost 61 lbs
It was reality-check time for me; I had just turned 40 and my weight was a lot closer to 400 pounds than to 300 pounds. My sedentary lifestyle as an IT Manager and poor diet was really getting the better of me. I knew it wasn’t healthy to be carrying around this much weight, but it was just so tough to get motivated to do anything about it. I have asthma, I was borderline hypertensive and I have a family history of type II diabetes—my mother had it, my farther has it, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. I had to lose weight and get fit. But it was just too easy to get lost in denial. Luckily soon after my 40th birthday I was fortunate enough to be given a wakeup call.
September 23rd 2012 is the date everything changed for my family and me, a date we will never forget. That’s the date that my son was diagnosed with type I diabetes. Seeing what Diabetic Ketoacidosis did to my son and the treatment he underwent was more than enough to flip that motivation switch “on.” There was nothing we could have done to prevent my son from getting Type I Diabetes but now there is nothing I won’t do to prevent myself from getting Type II diabetes. I will not let my family go through the pain of watching me, like I had to with my son.
In the days and weeks that followed my son’s diagnosis we met with diabetic doctors, nurses, nutritionists, etc. Since we had to make changes for him, and learn a whole new lifestyle to manage his diabetes, I decided, why not for me too? So it began. I became a different person, although at the time you couldn’t tell it physically. I had undergone an inner transformation. No longer would I make excuses for not working out or eating healthy. I was ready to start the journey to my new Body-for-LIFE!
I started out slowly and made steady progress. Soon I wanted to pick it up a notch. In my previous attempts at motivating myself to do something about my weight and health, I had heard about the Body-for-LIFE 12-Week Challenge. I really liked to idea of the program and the 12-Week Challenge. In fact I had even registered online a few years prior. However, now I was armed with newfound motivation and I was already making good progress. I knew this program was just what I needed. All I had to do was set my time for the Challenge and take everything to the next level.
Now after completing my Body-for-LIFE challenge and seeing my before and after pictures, I am astonished and proud of my physical transformation. But that physical transformation is nowhere near as important as my inner transformation. I am doing my part to be there for my family.
