Goal: Manage Weight

Laura Kelly

I’m not a gym rat. I’m a mother, a wife, a sister, and a friend. But I’m not a gym rat. To be quite frank, working out has always fallen somewhere between getting my hair highlighted and cleaning out the dryer lint. Something that needs to be done but that I put off way longer than I should. I’m your everyday wife and mom who struggles to balance a family and work life, while maintaining my sanity without overindulging in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. It sounds clichéd but growing up, I was the fat kid. My brothers affectionately nicknamed me “Jabba.” As I matured, I struggled with my weight. I would take extreme measures, like purging, diuretics or laxatives. I never found time to make my weight or health a priority; and as a result of all the yo-yo dieting, ending up with hypothyroidism. Looking in the mirror, all I could see was my breeding hips and would try to imagine a day when they weren’t encapsulated in fat. I was never at a place where I loved my body. Over the course of this Challenge, I fell in love with myself. I became so much more than I could have imagined. I became someone who is confident in her body. Not only did I transform my body, but I transformed my entire mindset. Walt Disney said, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” I’ve finally realized that instead of looking at the negative and expecting the worst to happen, if you are willing to put yourself out there, you may just realize who you can become.
