Goal: Manage Weight

Brian Miller

I didn’t start the Body-for-LIFE® Challenge with the idea of transforming myself. I have been defeatist and negative most of my life. Three years ago I was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia that prevents bone marrow from making red blood cells. A few months ago I came across a number of motivational quotes on Facebook. There were two things that resonated with me. The first was “You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days you are feeling good,” and the second was “Find a way instead of an excuse.” I started the Challenge the next day. I still had some cans of EAS® 100% whey protein powder in the cupboard, Bill Phillips’ books, Body-for-LIFE and Eating-for-LIFE, and a Success Journal from a failed try back in 2007. I posted every day on Facebook so my friends and family could help keep me on track. That’s when my inner transformation truly began. I realized that rather than I being motivated by them, they began to be motivated by me. Every day someone would post that they found a way instead of an excuse. My negativity had been washed away. I was asked by Florida’s Blood Centers to be interviewed as a person who receives blood at a local blood drive. I took the opportunity to thank all those people who have been keeping me alive and to encourage others to donate. If asked two months earlier I would have said “no,” as I was too embarrassed about my appearance and too bitter and selfish to care. I no longer live as if there is no tomorrow. I live the best life I can today so that I can live a better life tomorrow.
