Goal: Manage Weight

Results: Lost 29 pounds of fat.*

Barnette Holston

What started out as a 12-week program to lose weight turned into something much more. At 47, I was clearly feeling like a middle aged man - overweight, unhappy and not feeling good about myself. I tend to compartmentalize my life so I figured that if I lost the weight at least one thing would be going well. I found that things I was learning through my Body-for-LIFE experience could be applied to other areas of my life. I have a bad habit of starting things and never finishing. I started my MBA but stopped; finished my courses to sit for the CPA but haven’t followed through, and started to remodel my house but haven’t finished. Something has always gotten in the way: promotions, layoffs, financial concerns... I don’t believe it was these “obstacles” that stopped me from finishing. Instead, it’s a fear of failing or the idea that I have to be perfect. I want instant success. This Challenge has taught me that success happens over time. While you don't always see instant changes, incremental changes equate to great success. Things occurred that threatened to stop me but it’s how I managed these threats that made me stronger. I found that if I didn’t hit my 10’s everyday, or if my eating habits slipped, it didn’t meant I had to quit. I scaled back or set mini goals to move forward. Now, I have begun to apply this thinking to other areas of my life. I have new goals and I don’t have to be perfect. I’m celebrating the new outwardly transformed me! Thirty pounds lighter and much more confidant! That’s something I want to continue!
