Brian Shippert

I left medical school working out regularly, training for triathlons, and eating a reasonable diet. Fast forward seven years later, I was fifty pounds heavier, bordering on being morbidly obese, diagnosed with high blood pressure, sleep apnea, suffered a small stroke, struggled to find a mental balance I once had and becoming more disenchanted with the person I had become. The transformation brought me back to center. I first noticed my circadian rhythms normalized, and my perpetual fatigue lifted despite working harder than I had in the past seven years. Personally, I noticed I was less irritable and I became more approachable at work. One of the strangest transformations came from the realization of the emotional ties to food. During the first two weeks, TV commercials for fast food would entice strong cravings. Eventually, I realized these cravings weren’t actually hunger pangs, but a coping mechanism for stress in life. I reassessed my outlook and goals and realized, while I was successful professionally, I was losing more of myself personally and spiritually.  Now, I feel more centered, rested, happy and satisfied after reflecting on where I was headed compared to where I am now, and the Body-for-LIFE program facilitated a greater self-awareness.
