Q&A with Sylvia Bortman
Q: Describe your life before the Body-for-LIFE® Challenge?
After turning 50 my weight began creep up. I was out of shape from lack of exercise, and I was addicted to sugar. I lacked energy and enthusiasm. My resting heart rate was in the high 80's (now it is in the low 50's). I had weak abdominal muscles from having 5 C-sections, and I did not think that is was possible for me to have great abs, it goes to show how wrong I was! I did not know at that time how the magic of BFL would work in my life!
Q: What made you finally decide to take that first step and enter the Challenge?
I was tired of hiding behind baggy clothes! I was tired of being tired!
I had received an email from a friend telling me about a free starter guide for Body-for-LIFE®. I went to the web site to sign up for the starter guide, and I began to look around the web site. I came across the page with the champion transformations. I can still remember that day as if it was yesterday. I started looking at all the amazing transformations, Michelle Lee, Tracy Jeffries, Donna Szabo, Mariah Yu, and so many more, and I looked at my husband and I said, "I can do this." I even had my husband come over to the computer and look at the transformations with me, and I kept repeating over and over, that I could do this!
Q: What were your very first impressions of the program? Did you struggle or was it liberating?
It was definitely liberating for me! I was addicted to sweets, and I never thought that I would be able to give up sugar, well, I was surprised to find that after starting BFL my desire for sugar had completely disappeared. I attribute proper nutrition, eating every 2 to 3 hours, exercise, the right supplements, and Myoplex® Lite shakes, as key factors in breaking my addiction to sugar.
I also found it very liberating to actually find a program that not only works, but is easy to follow, and is program I can live for life!
Q: Talk about the moment you first began to see changes in your body and/or outlook?
At first I began to have more energy, and within a short time I started see muscle where there was none. Within a couple of weeks my clothes started to get loose. I was really glad I took progress pictures every two weeks, just seeing the changes in my pictures was so encouraging and motivating; this really kept the fire burning under me! I could not believe how much my body was changing in such a short time! Not only was my body changing, but my confidence in myself began to soar, and not just in the way my body was changing, but in every area of my life!
Q: Did you have to over-come any obstacles during your 12-Week Challenge?
Mostly balance and coordination problems due to being ADHD and dyslexic, but you would not really notice it now, just doing the workouts consistently helped my coordination and balance remarkably!
I had quite a few obstacles after my 12 week challenge. My dear Mother passed away last April, my oldest son was in a bad accident last Sept., and my dear Dad just recently passed away. It was God, my family, my BFL family, and BFL itself that kept me strong, it was the glue that held me together! When my son had his accident he was in the hospital for 3 weeks. He was on life support for the first week. He had a C1 fracture in his neck, fractured his skull and face, and had a brain bleed. The doctors were not sure if he would make it. I spent the entire three weeks at his bedside. I had my husband bring me some resistance bands, which I used to workout with. A group of wonderful folks from the BFL community sent a care package to the hospital for me. The care package was filled with Myoplex® Lite Shakes and bars, fruit, almonds, fitness magazines, etc. I will never forget all of the love, thought, and caring that was put into that package! The BFL community has truly been a stronghold for me. Oh, Yes, by the way, my son is doing great now!
Q: How did you feel on the very last day of your Challenge?
I was so excited that I had completed the challenge! It was such a wonderful feeling inside!
Q: What was the reaction of your friends and family to the amazing changes you made?
My friends and family were proud of me! There has not been a day gone by that I have not shared a part of my BFL journey with someone. I get emails, IM's, and pm's everyday with people asking me "How I did It?"
I had so many people (friends, family, BFL family) telling me that I was going to get the call from Porter. My husband now has two names for me, one is Mighty Mouse, and the other name he calls me is The Babe! My children are all so proud of me; they brag about me to all of their friends, I can't even explain how great that makes me feel!
Q: Do you still follow the Body-for-LIFE® program?
Yes, although, after I finished my challenge I tried a few different exercise routines for a short time other then the 12, 10, 8, 6, 12, but learn that none of them worked as well or as effective as the way it is written in the BFL book! There is a science to BFL, and it works! Why fix what is not broke! So needless to say, it did not take long for me to jump back on the BFL bandwagon. I never did deviate from the BFL eating plan or BFL cardio. By The Book is the only way, it works!
Q: If someone were to ask your advice about starting—and finishing—the Challenge, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to follow the program by the book! I would tell them to stick with it, and give it the full 12 weeks, because most people do not start seeing the biggest change until the last 4 weeks. I tell them to eat clean, don't miss workouts, hit their 10, and to never give up. I always tell them if they have any questions or concerns that they can email me anytime. I also recommend that they call the EAS® team of experts at the 1-800 # and one of the EAS® fitness experts can help them decide which supplements are best for them.
Q: How has your life changed since doing the Challenge?
I am healthier, happier, and more energetic then I have ever been in my entire life! I know now that there is nothing that I cannot do! If I can believe it I can achieve it!
Q: Where do you think you’d be if you had never done the Challenge?
My health would be deteriorating; I would have continued to gain weight! I would be a very unhappy and depressed individual.
Q: After going through the 12 Weeks, how was your mindset different than it was before? Where you able to face challenges in your life with more confidence?
Oh, yes, everything I mentioned that happened in the last year, I don't know how I could have gotten through all that without BFL! BFL gave me the strength in both my body and my mind to get through whatever I have to face in my life!
I also know now that I can do anything I set my mind to! I am not afraid to try new things! I feel like there is nothing I cannot do!
Q: What is your favorite free day meal?
Q: How have you spread the word of Body-for-LIFE® to other folks?
I am on a lot of the BFL support boards and the Guestbook. I have told my story to many, many people. I have given my copies of the BFL book to friends and family. I have even had strangers come up to me and ask me if I workout, and of course that always give me the opportunity to tell them about BFL.
Q: What are your current goals?
I have just completed some of my goals. I have my certifications for both my personal trainer, and advance trainer. I am going to continue my education in the fitness field. And I also plan on continuing to build both my body and my mind.

Success is being able to achieve things that you want to or have been wanting to achieve. It’s the sweet feeling of victory! Success is the fulfillment of one desires.
