We’d run the three miles in twenty-one or twenty-two minutes. Just under eight minutes a mile [Note: when running on his own in 1968, Lee would get his time down to six-and-a half minutes per mile]. So this morning he said to me “We’re going to go five.” I said, “Bruce, I can’t go five. I’m a helluva lot older than you are, and I can’t do five.” He said, “When we get to three, we’ll shift gears and it’s only two more and you’ll do it.” I said “Okay, hell, I’ll go for it.” So we get to three, we go into the fourth mile and I’m okay for three or four minutes, and then I really begin to give out. I’m tired, my heart’s pounding, I can’t go any more and so I say to him, “Bruce if I run any more,” –and we’re still running-”if I run any more I’m liable to have a heart attack and die.” He said, “Then die.” It made me so mad that I went the full five miles. Afterward I went to the shower and then I wanted to talk to him about it. I said, you know, “Why did you say that?” He said, “Because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

So remember that when you are at the end of your workout! :) I loved the "there are no limits. there are plateaus"

Forum Post: RE: Looking for a Mentor- Starting April 30, 2012 for the first time.

I just got started yesterday. Even though I'm a couple of weeks behind y'all, I would love to stay in touch for encouragement and advice. Best wishes all!!!

Forum Post: RE: Why BFL Works...Hussman Fitness

Found this thread by accident while searching for something entirely unrelated - I'm commenting so it gets bumped up to the top of the forum page for other people (who, like me, weren't on this forum back in 2010) to see and read. I'd read the whole article though - he notes one or two things farther down which increase fat loss at the cost of decreased muscle growth; I imagine you'd want to avoid those. I purchased the Body for Life Success Journal on Amazon (along with the Body for Life book, Body for Life Cooking book, and the DVD's). It was part of one of their deals. The Success Journal is brilliant and I use it daily to keep me on track with my 6 meals per day diet and exercise routines.

I also printed out some of the Exercise plans on this site which correspond with the Upper and Lower body routines. I fill them in and take them to the gym on a clipboard and keep close track on my progress throughout my session. Once competed and I have a bit of spare time during the day I slowly put together my next session by looking at how I went in the last session. It may be a bit of extra work filling it all in but I find it really motivating and keeps me on track as I see how much I'm progressing.

Keep up the good work. But they did loosen me up enough that I can make it to the end of the stair-stepping without killing my legs.

I did find a new idea this morning - tweaked my foot yesterday doing my LBWO and it wouldn't hold up for stair-stepping, so after "emergency-brainstorming" for an idea I took a brisk walk wearing a 25-lb backpack. That hit the "9"s, but my shins felt like they were on fire by the end. I'll probably make that my default for now since it's still less pain-and-strain than the other options :-).

@TassieTim - Thanks for the idea, the workplace idea is looking good. Not immediately - for the next three weeks I estimate (best case) I'd lose at least five hours to traffic because of how I'd have to re-arrange my schedule (my schedule's just wacky right now) - but for the last few weeks of my Challenge things should settle down and it will become a very attractive option. And just in time for the "home stretch"!

@StudentRN2013 - no stairs (it's not an apartment complex, I just have a mini-apartment - bedroom and small common area - in the garden level of a private home), but there is a pair of steps up to the back patio area, and that's what I use for stair-stepping (kind of like an aerobics step where you can only use one side). The concrete isn't quite even, though, so it pounds the feet more than it should and makes it easy to tweak something if I'm not extra-careful.

Forum Post: RE: This week's focus goals

Annie50, those are great goals to focus on for the week!
