Kids are all into high school now, and I'm 44. Anyway, I run marathons and have run one ultra-marathon, but I'm in cruddy shape right now after a couple of health problems. First I got my sternum broken during a taewondo drill (not my mistake, btw) and then later in the same year my appendix ruptured. The doctor didn't diagnose it as a ruptured appendix, so it was another 4 days until I actually started having seizures and my wife called an ambulance. Emergency surgery, 7 days in the hospital, completely delirious. 30 days of barely moving, while eating everything possible to heal a 10 inch incision and retain muscle mass ... another 60 days of not being allowed to lift more than 30 pounds. That restriction got lifted 22 days ago, so I started going to the gym and eventually decided that I'd use BFL as the program for getting back into shape. I put on 20 pounds (and lost a lot of muscle, too), so there's a long way to go.

And my progress report for 5/22/12

I just did my first aerobic day on a stationary bike -- I used one that had a cupholder and a tv screen, because there were places to put my stopwatch and my piece of paper and my pen and my water bottle ... And then realized that since the machine has a timer on it, I looked pretty stupid checking that stopwatch. Took me about five minutes to leap catlike to that realization. :)

I've only eaten 2 meals, and it's 2:40PM, but that's probably okay ... I get hungrier in the evenings. Ideally I would be spacing the meals out better, but it's going to take a bit of practice to get into the program (like knowing the bike has a timer on it).

Forum Post: RE: I started week #8 today!! Here is a 5k update.....26:45...woohoo. My goal was to break 27 minutes by the end of summer but it's already done. It was cooler this morning so the run felt comfortable. I ran with an app on my iphone called "maymyrun" and it's like a gps and records everything. Now according the the app the 5k route I have been running is 4.94 km. I guess that's close enough and I'm happy my conditioning is improving. Next 2 days will be upper body workouts for me (which I love). Now you gotta tell me...where you did hide the bulldozer and the crane. Your project…that is insanity (I guess like the work out) at its finest. That pool and spa will be amazing when it is finished. Hey, any of your neighbors moving out in the next year...I want to swim in that pool...just saying. I think my project is on a different economy of scale. I will have to move up really close when I take a photo so you can see it. Great job and I am sure it will be over before you know it.

Tonja - I feel a little tired as well but not at the start between my C1 and C2 as I had 9 days off. It in fact gave me a little more energy and my lifts seem to jump up a little in performance at the beginning of C2. So rest can be good. Yeah get your bike out and enjoy the adventure with your four year old. Before you know it she will be 16 wanting you to chase her all across the state. Kids are such a blessing. I am just really blessed that mine still wants to hang around lots with mom and dad. I hope you find a little more energy and if I remember right you were going to go for six weeks-ish and then rest a little (at least I thought that was what you said at the start of C2 is that correct). WOW that was a long, amazing 84 days. Phew!!

I should probably be super excited but I hit a burnout point too, all last week. Got in only 2 or 3 workouts; I honestly don't remember. My husband's 22-year-old sister moved in with us (from out of state) and it threw my entire world out of flux. We are in no position to accommodate her and apparently us saying "Hey, come visit some time!" means "Hey, if you ever break up with your boyfriend and have no money, come on out!"

Despite that, I did maintain my clean eating and am back on the wagon this week with active rest. Emphasis on active. I KILLED a super tough hike yesterday. My average from trailhead to summit for this particular hike used to be about 1 1/2 hours. Yesterday, I did it in 45 minutes. After working up a mondo appetite I went out to dinner with my husband for my birthday. We went to a new-style Italian restaurant that uses lots fresh and local ingredients. It was an amazing meal, and pretty darn healthy too.

Tonja, good job on the 2.8 miles! You'll get there. Keep up with the HIIT and maybe add in a distance run each week and see how goes? I am going to start doing that: 3 days of strength and/or core exercises, 2 days of HIIT and 1 day of either a distance run or a hard hike.

So yeah, stats. Didn't meet my body fat goal (wanted to be at 23%), but the inches I lost is mind blowing. So I'm taking that as a triumph because I really had no idea where I would be with that. Here is a quick summary with Before / After listed for each.

Weight: 161 / 152 (-9lbs)

Body Fat: 31.5 / 26.2 (-5.4%)

Hips: 38.5 / 37.625 (-0.875")

Chest: 31 / 32.25 (+1.25")

Wearing Waist: 37.75 / 35.5 (-2.25")

True Waist: 33.875 / 29.5 (-4.375") (WOAH!)

Thigh Left: 23.5 / 21.625 (-1.875")

Thigh Right: 23.5 / 21.5 (-2.0")

Calf Left: 14.375 / 14.125 (-0.25")

Calf Right: 14.75 / 14.5 (-0.25")

Bicep Left: 11.875 / 11.75 (-0.125")

Bicep Right: 12 / 12 (0)

Total Inches Lost: 10.75"

Wow! My body composition has also changed drastically. I lost about 11lbs of fat and my body is much leaner and more toned looking, especially in my arms and legs. I don't know this from BFL -- this is my first time -- but I run marathons and ultra-marathons, which have an eating-effect thing as well. With things like this, one-time mistakes don't cause problems, and on the other hand, one-day efforts don't move you much forward. It's about keeping pretty much with the program pretty much all the time.

To get 12 week results in exactly 12 weeks, maybe you need to be more rigid about it, but my guess is that someone following the program with fierce determination but a human number of screwups ... will still get there, just a week or three late. Bodies react to multi-day trends, not to what happened just yesterday.
