Finishing the Challenge and the 100 Mile Ultramarathon-A New Goal for a 2011 BFL Champion

  • Joining the Body-For-Life challenge is the beginning of a journey that I pray all of you will soon recognize should not end with your final completion date. Rather, the challenge should be a stepping stone that will propel you forward towards a much more enriching and fulfilling life experience. You will realize after achieving your 12 weeks that you have so much potential to do more than you ever believed was imaginable. At that point, you must also see that the sky is the limit for you and that you are capable of doing anything in which you focus your mind 100% towards.

    A point of importance is that you set for yourself new goals. Seek out new challenges and diverge down multiple paths towards new adventures. This will do two things for you. First, it will ensure that you keep the gains that you fought so hard to achieve, keeping your body strong, your mind sharp and your spirit bright. Second, it will make your life exponentially better, seeing views not all have earned the privilege of seeing and experiencing a deep level of contentedness. A self satisfaction for finding a new cuspice of existence that at one point was thought to be unimaginable to even dream of reaching. You must seek these novel experiences out-you now have the ability to do them. Make every effort to do so before the test of time imparts on your body the inability to move forward as quickly.

    That being said, I want to show you how meaningful and easy setting a goal can actually be, no matter how difficult it may appear. As long as you are willing to take the steps necessary in order to achieve it. Then execute each one as flawlessly as the last and more precisely than the one that came before. To do this I am going to write about my efforts to train for the up and coming Badger Mountain Ultra-Marathon:

    This is a 100 mile race that I pray will test my limits physically, spiritually and mentally. I have already been told that for me it cannot be done. Being too large, having not enough time to prepare, it being just too long, amongst many other excuses others have already given me. I make the distinction that those excuses are from outside myself. Mainly the reason why I do not listen to them is because the only voice that should ever drive you or I, is the voice that comes from within-there is no reason why anyone cannot achieve besides the reasons that they allow to make themselves believe that they cannot do it. There is no reason in my mind that expresses to me that I will not step over that finish line-victorious. In fact, because I believe it so strongly, will it to be so readily and have expressed it to the universe to hear so openly, in my mind I see it as already having been done.

    There are obstacles yes and many of them will be worthy challenges to overcome, nonetheless, no matter what, they will be met and conquered like any other I have faced before. Today I start the beginning of a training regimen I have never done. For the first time in my life I will be training for long term sustainable endurance rather than completing a short race at an amiable speed. Yes, for this race, my goals have aligned differently-for this race it will not about being the fastest, or about winning a top placing rank, no not this one. This race will be the first run where I will win solely by facing the hardships that comes with it and seeing it through till the final footfall lands upon the opposing side of the finish line.

    I thought I was pushing myself to do my first ever 1/2 marathon! But a 100 mile marathon! That's nuts! But hey crazy people are more fun!

    All jokes aside, keep it up and don't let anyone tell you can't do it. If you can dream it, you can achieve it!

  • Best of luck to you! I did a 5k at the end of my second BFL challenge. After that I set a goal to do a 10K and trained for 8 weeks. After my 10K I eventually decided to do a Half Marathon the week after I finished my 4th BFL challenge. Currently I have been training for a marathon and had to take time off due to an IT band issue.

    You are riding high off your recent Champion announcement. What is your furthest distance ran? How long have you been training for the event? I know the feeling of being indestructible. I felt it up until 2 weeks ago when I got injured. I will not try to convince you of anything and I admire your inner passion and willingness to set big goals. I think alot more people could benefit from thinking like you.

    I signed up for a Tough Mudder the same day as your 100 miler. It looks like you have 32 hours to complete the course. Do you have a support team and do you plan to camp?

  • Zavi-Ha yeah, I can understand that, on the treadmill I was beginning to think I was a little crazy but realized it all comes down to mind over matter.

    I am definitely going to keep striving for it. I am taking pictures of my distances because my roommates don't believe me. I am find throughout my life that those who think they cannot do something assume that others cannot achieve it either. I am looking forward to earning that belt and wearing it around for them to see.

    Thank you for your words of encouragement. You will do great in your 1/2 marathon, make sure you are taking good care of your nutrition and listening to your body when it tugs on your sleeve to let you know when its hungry or has an ache. Let me know how you did when you have completed it.

  • BryanL-My furthest distance ran was a 52 mile run last year but I ran (jogged more-so I should say) 56 miles yesterday while training. My new Goal since I beat yesterdays goal by 20 miles is to hit 75 miles by the end of the week. I will rest, then start to do cross training exercises to strengthen the fibers in my legs. The biggest obstacle I have found already is time and boredom, running for 7 1/2 hours with on a few breaks becomes mundane.

    My training started this week. I wanted to get out of the starting blocks strong so 26.5 miles on the treadmill was the goal two days ago. Even though that goal was accomplished I learned quite a bit very quickly by doing that. Nutrition is key, don't overdo it, this is about endurance and making it to the end, not speed (right now) and to listen to my body more, I was forcing it to run when it was on fumes, cannot do that.

    How did you injure yourself? Is there any advice you might have that I most likely won't be able to find while researching kinetics, supplimentation, long distance running training guides or anything of the like? I think experience is the best of teachers but right now, I only have myself and what others have written to go off of--I do not know any endurance racers in my area either to milk them for knowledge.

    My support team will be the staff who are putting on the race, they are providing checkpoints every 6-8 miles with water and hot food from what I have read. Everything else will solely be up to me. I know it appears ignorant to only rely on myself for such a challenge but unfortunately where I live most either believe me to not be able to accomplish it or flat out want me to fail. I can hear it in their voice and see it in their eyes. Besides a few scattered 'good lucks' I already knew that I am completely alone on this one. I will try to put together a support team though. I have a few good friends that live outside my city who are fitness fanatics as well.

    I do not plan to camp, I will see it through till the end, whether it be at the finish line or from dropping from exhaustion. When it comes down to it, my greatest victory will be in giving it all that I have and leaving nothing to question. Simply, I will never have to ask myself  if I could of done more, if I could of yielded a different outcome. I believe there is honor in the struggle no matter the circumstances or how the final cards lay out.

    Didn't mean to go on a tangent, ha, I hope you do well at the Tough Mudder, those races are intense and so much fun! I believe Steve Lowe from EAS will be at most of the Mudders, make sure to stop by the booth and say hi. He is awesome, you'll like him a lot. Let me know how your race goes!
