Workout in AM vs. PM

  • Hi everyone,

I did the BFL program last summer and lost 35 lbs. I was working from home at the time and did my workouts in the morning. Now that job ended and have found myself working fulltime with a long commute. The days are long, so on a good day, I'm away from my house for 12 hours.

Anyway, I'm working out in the evenings for the most part, but Bill Phillips says morning workouts are better because you see better results. What do you guys think? I haven't been doing evenings for long, so I really have no personal experience with this.

  • I think MORNING. I think you have more energy, better attitude and it is done!!! I have tried both, and end of the day is a questionable whether I work out or not. I debate with myself. Morning is a set regiment if you get up. Getting up is the hardest part. GO Morning.

  • Elle, Just found out looking through the Threads we are in the same Group for Jan 7!!! Cool!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to try mornings starting next week. I'm not a morning person though *yawn*.

Cool we're in the same group! I will be on that thread often. :)

  • I think that whatever you can stick to is best.  If you can only work out in the evenings- then make it happen.  I am not a morning person, but definitely agree with what Mustng is saying.  I like getting my workout done and over with because my willingness to work out dies as the day goes on.  I think, for a while, I'm going to start going to bed really early so that I have no excuses.  I will just have to give up sitting on the couch and watching tv :)

  • My energy level goes down as the day goes on. I sometimes fall asleep on the train ride home. I'll let you guys know how I make out next week.

  • So today and yesterday, I managed to drag myself out of bed at 5 AM. I did UBWO yesterday and Cardio today. Tomorrow, I'm doing LBWO. It feels great to know my workout is done and I don't have to worry about working out after work.

  • I'm trying to figure out how to muster up the energy to wake up so early and get back home by 6:30 to wake up my boys for school.  UBWO and LBWO can be done at home..but aerobics needs to be either gym or outside (still too dark and desserted)...............My biggest challenge is getting my workouts in AND being enthused about it.  I will try to start next week at least my aerobics at tohe gym in the AM........Wake at 5:30 instead of 6:15........get to gym by 5:50.............work out 20 minutes.......home by 6:15/6:20........quick shower and wake up the boys...........guess I can do it.  I mean I CAN DO IT!

Any comments or advise would be appreciated.................thanks ( btw I'm in the middle of 2nd week)

  • Update...........did UBWO this morning (woke up at 5:30).............it was FANTASTIC...........hope to keep it up.

  • Now I go to the gym for weights and do cardio at home (either run or elliptical), but when I did BFL 12 years ago, I used-NO LIE-a mini trampoline.  I'd adjust what I did on it to make it more challenging to hit my levels.  I watched the news while I did it, because the kept a clock on the tv in the mornings, so I knew when it was time to switch to the next level.

I prefer to do AM, because I make too many excuses as the day goes on. First thing in the morning, it's me, my shoes, my bad breath and my bedhead...and I'm working out before I've talked myself out of it.  :)  By the time I leave work, I have all the reasons to not do it.  It's good to be done with it, and I do go through the rest of the day being more productive because I've already started that way.

    Good luck to you!!

*I tivo all of my favorite tv shows that I used to stay up late watching, and now I watch them on my free day!  It helps my productivity, too, because I'm in bed by 9:30 every night!  I have to get up at 4:55 to work out, so asleep early is one of my goals for the program.

  • Thanks everyone! I agree morning is better. I talk myself out of going to the gym at night, because there's too many things to do. I almost talked myself out of Saturday, because I had to errands, clean the house and do laundry. :)

  • This is just myself, 26 yr male... I have better workouts in the morning in terms of pushing myself hard and feeling really accomplished at the gym.  However, when I'm lifting weights, I can actually lift heavier weights in the evening time.  I have no justification for this... I work long days and when I gym at night I just have more strength, but my morning workouts seem overall better... maybe its because the gym is empty and people don't talk to me so I can keep my HR high and go all out.

  • Hi Marcus. Like your username. I find it tough to get up in the morning, but I do have a better workout in the morning. Less people there does help, so I don't have to wait around for any equipment. In the morning, people are on a time table, so their is less socializing. After work, I find my feet hurt and I'm drained from the long commute (two trains and a lot of walking).

  • Mornings are better for losing fat since you haven't eaten all night and so your body burns only what it has available which will be your fat stores.  Your metabolism is firing a lot more in the mornings than in the evening, so some people would say evenings to keep your metabolism firing away throughout the day, but if you can work harder in the mornings and feel good all day then by all means start your day out right with a good workout.
