BERRIES?

  • Hi all!  Just wondering if strawberries are the only acceptable berries or can we have blueberries/blackberries as well?  Also, what about bananas?  They aren't on the list, but when he talks about fruit in the book he mentions bananas.

  • Hi Shelley,

There are too many great sources of carbs to list! The "authorized foods list" is just an example of what to eat just as the unauthorized list is an example of what not to eat (there are certainly a lot more things you could eat that are "unauthorized" that didn't make the list). A healthy diet and lifestyle is about incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet. The more colors the better. To create the needed calorie deficit for weightloss, you still have to follow the portion recommendations. That means one portion of fruit with your portion of protein...not unlimited amounts just because it is good for you. Some people will say that the authorized list is the only foods you can eat. However, past champions will tell you that they ate a variety of fruits and vegetable and not only acheived great physicall transformations, but benefited from the various nutrients found in a diet filled with a variety of healthy foods. Body for Life is a lifestyle...for life! It is meant to be something you can follow for life. Limiting your diet to strawberries only would not be as healthy as mixing it up with other fruits...and much harder to stick to for life as variety helps one make BFL a lifestyle and not just another diet. That being said, strawberries are great for many reasons, one of them being a full cup has only 50 calories. The average bannana has twice that amount. So, you can see why many people would prefer strawberries when on a diet. But, they are by no means the only fruit you are allowed to use when following the BFL program. Good luck and happy healthy eating!

  • thanks marathonmama.  i figured other berries would be just as good, especially blueberries since they are a 'superfood.'
