Portion sizes for cooked brown rice

  • Hi again folks,

    I am in the 9th week now and feeling great.  Lost 20 lbs already :)

    I have a question about portion sizes for cooked brown rice.  I have a rice cooker (greatest invention known to man ha-ha)...and I measure one portion of uncooked rice to 2 portions water.  Portion in this uncooked case is the little measuring cup that comes with the rice cooker.  

    Here is the problem.  When the rice is done cooking, it balloons in size and I am no longer sure what a "correct Body For Life portion is" anymore.

    I know Bill says to use "the size of your palm or clenched fist"....so when I spoon out the rice, I try to eyeball a portion that is the size of my fist (about enough to fill a cupcake wrapper).  However, I am worried that my portion sizes are still too large. Any ideas?  I want to continue to KISS (keep it simple sweetie) here with BFL and not using a measuring cup on the cooked rice...but it looks like I might have to resort to this.

    Any thoughts from the forum?  Love you guys!

  • Eye-balling a fist sized portion of rice sounds reasonable to me.  The fact that you've lost 20 lbs in 9 weeks means you're doing great, so keep it up and stick to the fist-sized estimate.

  • Rice is a tricky one.  Not all rices have even basically the same macro-nutrient contents levels.  And not to mention that some get much more plump than others.  Something I learned from EAS, back in the Bill Phillips days, was to go by grams.  For every pound of bodyweight, 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of carb, per day.  The "average" woman is 150 pounds.  Divided by 6 BFL meals, and that's a meal of 25 grams of carb and 25 grams of protein for each of the 6.  This is NOT weight of the food.  Your rice package should give you the nutritional value, and it's not like you have to figure it out multiple times.  At random I Googled brown rice labels.  One is 38 grams for 1/4 of a dry cup.  If your goal is 30 grams per meal, then I would make a full cup, which will yield 5 portions of 30.4 each.  Once you know that, it doesn't need to be figured out again.  Just divide up the portions right after and then that's done.  Personally I actually think this is easier than eye-balling.  My hands get bigger when I'm hungry... weird.  And no one would have enough cottage cheese or eggs if they were using the eye-ball method.

  • I have to respectfully disagree Jessica.  My wife and I have been living BFL for 8 years now, and the palm and fist portion size still serve us well, even for things like rice and cottage cheese.  Depending on the size of the person, a 1-cup measuring cup is very close to the size of a closed fist.  My fist is slightly bigger than a cup, but you get the idea.  The fist and palm are so easy, no grams to figure out, just size it and go.  If the method above works for you, then by all means use it.  My point to Derek was that he's obviously getting very good results, so his eye-ball method is working for him.

  • Some can more easily use that method.  I'm not part of that group.  Depending on how you make eggs, for instance, will drastically change the number used.  Will you get good results from doing BFL and just being reasonable, like eye-balling?  ABSOFREAKINLUTELY!  You can also get more precise, if your goal is to achieve optimal results.  My last entry didn't come from just doing it by the book.  It came from intense focus.  Now one can also get nutty (a VERY scientific word) if they're too into each detail, but doing grams is a very simple way to be accurate.  And it's not like you need to a lot.  Once you know that portion, and most of us really do stick to the same basic stuff, then it's done.  A closed fist for me is probably 3/4 of a cup.  I couldn't say for sure... but that would be way too much rice for me, and this I know.  With many, if not most things, the fist/palm is the way to go.  I don't measure my sweet potato.  I'm nutty, but not THAT nutty. 

    Just trying to offer an accurate way to determine what he was seeking to know, should that be his goal, more precision.  Of course Derek has already done very well.  His results speak to that, so no need for major tweaks, because he's got a winning formula there.  We can all agree on that!
