My temptations.... AREN'T anymore!!

  • C1W3D5

I'm a teacher. If anyone else out there is a teacher, you know that where there are teachers, there is often a lot of FOOD. A lot of BAD foods. We have Food Friday everytime we get paid, "Thank you Breakfasts" for this department or that, snacks at lunchtime because we're voting for the bond... it's ALWAYS there.

It used to be hard for me to walk into the teacher's lounge, knowing I was going to be tempted by *insert food porn here* of all kinds, shapes, and sizes. Rarely was there any pure fruit, or whole grain breads... no, no... none of that.

But now, after almost a full three weeks, BEHOLD AND LO!! It's not a temptation anymore!!! Hooray!! I don't even WANT it because, as one of my like-minded colleagues observed this morning as I was blending my EAS Protein and Oatmeal shake and we glared disdainfully at the food porn littering the tables, "Food is fuel..." and I don't want any of THAT garbage in my tank! I'll take my protein shake, thank you very much!!

    What a great feeling!

SO... to anyone who is newer out there than I (admittedly you can't get a whole lot newer than I, but still...) it DOES go away! It DOES get easier! You DO begin to crave the healthy, good foods that are good to your body!!

Studies show that it takes about 21 days to change, eliminate, or create a habit... I'm liking the new habits that BFL has helped me develop!

  • Kimmie-I'm a teacher(PE) also and know exactly how you feel. We have a teacher appreciation committee and every Monday there are "snacks" in the office. I piped up one year being the PE/Health teacher that if it would be possible to have healthier stuff, then that would be great. Now most of the stuff is healthy, but I still avoid it cause it doesn't fit into my eating plan. Although I will swipe an apple or orange here and there!

Congrats on overcoming this and being a good example to your fellow teachers!! I take protein shakes and apples to my meetings all the time. Still get strange looks, but I don't care cause I'm 30# lighter than before!! :)

Keep up the great work!! :)

  • Isn't it GREAT!!!  I work in an insurance office our underwriters bringing in goodies to bribe us into writing business with them.  One brought in 3 dozen Dunkin Donuts and a big box of Cinnamon roles.   He comes over and says "I brought donuts".  I said "won't eat em".  He asked if I would prefer bagels next time.  I said no...I've got my oatmeal and protein.   They looked at me like I was retarded then asked if I was on some crazy diet.   I said nope...just a way of life now!  :)

  • Good Job Heather.....the next time you should say something like,

"If you want to earn my business, then stop trying to send me to an early grave!  I prefer Myoplex shakes and nutrition bars please!"

Would be interesting to see what they do....=)

  • Hey Kimmine and DebbieMO. I completely understand how you ladies feel. If it's not "eat out friday's" and PTO appreciation breakfasts it's thank you cakes. Just today the PTO gave all the students and teachers at my school icecream sandwiches for completing "Integrity Time". Kimmie, I'm only week 5 and I too am beginning to realize that my temptations are not the same. Even when I go out to eat i notice that the chips and yummy appetizers don't even enter my mind. It's great!

  • Tiff-Yes I'm the same way about the treats, when our kids have birthdays they come around to the teachers and share with us, don't want to hurt their feelings so I just take it say thank you, set it in my office and when no one is looking, toss it. Rarely is there anything healthy that I would save for my own kids after school...

Our 8th graders are doing a fundraiser and I thought that this was nixed a couple of years ago, but the 8th grade teachers brought it back...they sell those $1 candy bars...310 calories 17g fat. Ugghh! So I made it know AGAIN that this was not helping our students at all, each 8th grader has to sell at least 50 bars. This disgusts me to no end!  I offer a healthy snack cart after school and the kids are realizing that they can get a water and healthy snack for the same cost as the candy bar...Hopefully "my sales" will go up in the next few weeks!

Sorry just had to vent about that!

    What do you teach??

  • I hear ya Kimmie,  last night I turned down being treated to pizza.  My sister did ask first "Is it your free day today?"  I am not even afraid of the the free day snacks that are left over from last week that are sitting on the shelf in my cupboard.  I took it easy, but still treated myself last week and right now I am enjoying not having to see the post free day weight jump.

  • We used to do the candy bar sale when i was in school lol but thankfully i haven't seen it around lately.

Right now i'm working as a substitute in the special ed department. They've had me doing three different maternity leaves and had me everywhere from pre-k to fourth grade. I'm loving every minute of it. I'm hoping this gets my foot in the door for an actual classroom job next year. If it doesn't I don't know what else to do cause they've used me everyday except 3 or 4 days. lol

  • James, that is cool that your sister asked if it was your free day! My kids are asking me when my free day is, I usually only take a free meal, but it's nice having this "power" to resist those temptations!

Tiff-that is great you are getting so much work, but I know it can be draining to be a sub, luckily you have had maternity leaves so it is consistent. Will pray that you land a full time position! :)

  • DebbieMO; I like your idea of a fundraiser so much better. Way to go and teach these kids OPTIONS! You sound like such a blessing in their little lives. Keep up the great work coach!

  • I teach H.S. English up near KCMO, DebMO! What do you teach?

I know that a while back, some districts went so far as to even take out vending machines, nixed the candy sales, etc.. in my former district it all became outlawed. I moved a couple of years ago, however, and where I am now ... they don't even bother. There is a whole room just for the vending machines, the lunches they serve are ... WOW... nutritionally horrible, and there is absolutely NO effort whatsoever toward promoting healthy choices.

Fortunately, it's a large enough school that I have quite a number of colleagues who, like me, stick to the good stuff. Last week, my Science teacher neighbor (when it was their turn to bring the Friday snacks), popped her head into my room and said, "I brough fresh fruit just for you!!" You know what, though? It was the first thing GONE! I guess because the empty carbs are cheaper, that's what people generally bring, even when it's not what a lot of people would eat.

I have an office where I keep a minifridge with Myoplex shakes and yogurts, and a good stash of Protein Bars in the drawer! I make sure I always have healthy options around! :)

  • JamesK,

Isn't it awesome to know that even though tomorrow is a Free Day, we've finally gotten to a point where we've changed enough already that the "free day" snacks aren't that much of a temptation? It feels SO GOOD!!

My husband and I are going to a churrascuria tomorrow - one of those brazilian restaurants where they serve meats right off the spit and the veggie bar is just about all healthy... I'm looking forward to what I know will be a relatively healthy Free Day treat... and the rest of the day I'm going to eat pretty clean.  I'll let myself have some almonds, probably, but I don't even crave sweets anymore!

It feels so good to develop healthier habits!!

  • Kimmie, ahhhh the churrascuria.  My sister-in-law is Brazilian and when we went there she left the meat alone and loved on the salad bar.  Me?  I tried everything.....that was months ago.

  • ahhh. se fala portugues?// Minha irma mais velha casou-se com Brasileiro....LOL

  • Ooh yeah the Churrascuria!  I had the opportunity to go to Brazil in 2008 and experience that first hand.  Wow!  Brazilians as a whole are pretty much fit, I guess they've learned to eat their veggies and carbs first before stacking up on proteins.

Kimmie - if you've never been, some quick pointers - There are usually between 10-30 different selections of meat to try and the key is to taste and try as many as you can!  The thing is they just keep coming and coming.   There is a little rounded card that is red on one side and green on the other.  Make sure you use this card to your lets them know...hey stop slow I'm ready now.

James - That's awesome you're sister is understanding free day!  For me now it's not so much what I am going to eat or not, but what I am going to Do for the day since I don't have to work out.  I was going to go hiking tomorrow, but my sister is in town, so might jst spend more time w/ them.

Tiff - My prayers go out that you'll land something solid in your career that makes you happy.  One thing I am learning about BFL is that it's becoming my strong foundation.  We never know where life will take us, and no matter what life is going to throw our way in the future, I want to meet it as fit as possible and present it with my best.  Since you're teaching skills are wide ranged from K through 4th and beyond, give them your best.  It's proving that no matter where they put you, you can handle that.  You never know, it might be preparing you to be a Principal, a Super Indendant or something else in your cards.  We all know our school systems need more leadership and guidance.  Just keep doing it, we have faith in you!

Legs - Thought about your name as I did my morning bike cardio, just popped in my head to help keep me going.  Mainly because my legs were burning!

So everyone - Have a Great weekend and enjoy life - I know I am starting to once again
