Hey man...Did you get your workout in last night? Today is cardio day for me. Really hectic day, so will probably be late tonight before I can get my run in, but determined to do so. Journey strong, bro!
Yes sir! Did it and felt really good. Going to be sore, though. I will hit mine pretty late tonight as well. Sounds like you're not a morning person, just like I am not. I have thought, though, about forcing myself to get up at 5:00 or 5:15 (if I have my gym bag and work clothes ready to go) and just knock it out first thing. Sometimes if I wait until too late in the evening to workout, I get tired and don't have as good of energy to push myself on the reps and intervals. What about you? Are you sticking to the evening workouts and/or afternoon ones? No way I can do afternoons with my job (8 am to 5 pm desk job), but wish I could.
I will hit my cardio tonight pretty late as well.
Ag12 - Not really a morning exercise person either. Usually get up about 6 AM for personal quiet time w/ the Lord. But don't really enjoy exercising at that time. Used to beat myself up about that, but have determined that my ability to stay more consistent means that I need to do what works best for me. Noon workouts at fitness center are definitely my most consistent time for weights. I agree that sometimes I will cave in when I'm tired in the evening. But still am able to be more consistent then.
How's your eating?
Hey, Andy - You still w/ us? You get a workout in yesterday?
Just starting today myself. You can do this...Whether we win, or lose, the challenge, we are all winners for changing our lives for the better.
Got my cardio in....AT 10 PM! HA! Cheated a little tonight...went to a AA baseball game (Mississippi Braves) w/ several church members & had a hamburger...no mayo...no cheese...no chips...no soft drink...just the burger...Ate really well the rest of the day...
Lower body tomorrow!
Journey strong, friends!
Man, preacher_fireman, 10 PM? Pretty late! Was that before or after the AA game? I'm a hamburger fanatic myself, so I would have had to cheat a little myself like you did. My eating has been good, by the way, but I think I am in need of preparing several meals and freezing them on Saturdays and/or Sundays to pack with me the rest of the week. I did miss my cardio workout last night, but I plan to make it up this evening. Going to do legs and cardio both. I know this is not really advocated by the BFL book/program, but I am going to do it anyway to make sure I don't have an incomplete first week. One question: When are you taking your free days or will the vary for you each week?
Ag12 - Definitely did my cardio after the game! Funny thing...I was going to run laps around my subdivision like I usually do...my 23 y/o daughter drove in & saw me...stopped & said she saw a coyote in the front part of our subdivision! Decided I would just run up & down my street for the 20 mins! Not too crazy about running into a coyote in the dark (though he probably would have been more scared of me)! Ha!
Food/Meals: Free days will probably alternate some between Sat & Sun. All of my kids (25 y/o son, 23 y/o daughter, & 15 y/o son) are still living close (plus 3 grandkids!), so we have lots of family time, esp on weekends. Will use free day for that most of the time.
What are some of the things that you are eating on a typical day? What will be you be freezing for your meals?
Yesterday, I had bran flakes w/ skim milk for b'fast, banana w/ natural peanut butter at mid-morning, grilled chicken salad @ Chick-Fil-A for lunch, missed mid-afternoon, then hamburger at baseball game, & whey protein in skim milk for post-run. What do you think about that? Feedback (anybody else give feedback, too)? Suggestions?
Legs & abs at noon today!
Journey strong, bro!
Anyone having trouble eating in the morning? I'm working out in the early am on an empty stomach. I can usually get a protein smoothie in on the way to work and then I have no appetite until the afternoon.
Definitely feeling muscle soreness. Any doubts as to whether I was lifting enough have dissipated. Ouch.
Got legs & abs done @ about 11 AM. Feeling good. Eating right so far today...bran flakes w/ skim milk & some lean ham for b'fast, AdvantEDGE protein shake post-workout, 1/2 of a grilled chicken salad this afternoon...
Would love to hear others' info on your meals & food.
Hey Ag12 - I got my cardio in today at 10 AM instead of 10 PM! Ha!
How's it going?
Preacher_Fireman, sorry about the non-response for a few days. I had a busy weekend! Had to help my brother move all day on Saturday, so I missed my workout that day, but was able to make up for it (and basically used it as my off day). I did okay to kick things off through yesterday. I did take off on my eating yesterday and am back on it today. How about you? How are things going so far? What time is your workout happening today? Going with lower body today or are you back on upper body? I'm aiming for this evening again.
You asked about meals and food. I am eating as close to "by the original book" as I can. I'm trying to use the original food list as a guide. Cottage cheese has been a big part of my diet so far. Boiled eggs, chicken breasts and small baked potatoes, EAS Myoplex ready-to-drink shakes, fruit, meals prepared with 97% lean ground beef - these are a few examples of things I've been eating. I have been trying to avoid protein bars for the most part so far.
Ag12 - Got my upper body in today by the hardest...long staff meeting...then an urgent need at the church that I had to respond to right as I started my workout. Had to go back in dressing room, get clothes back on, head back to church, meet w/ person, then back to gym to do workout again. Finally got finished...but it was worth it!
Like the "original book" plan on food. Pulled book off shelf yesterday. Been doing pretty good on food...free day yesterday...but need to "lean up" a little on what I'm eating.
What are you doing for breakfast?
Preacher, I'm glad you got your workout in even though the circumstances tried to keep you from doing so. I bet there are plenty of times where things do not go as you planned as a Preacher (and Fireman, if you truly are a Fireman as well). Way to knock out your upper body despite all the trouble and unexpectedness!
Yeah, I've read on this site and also am of the opinion that your best results are obtained and/or achieved through sticking closer to the original book's diet plan rather than the Eating-for-Life book, Champions book, etc. Those other recipes are designed for maintenance, in my opinion. The cleaner you eat, the better the results - that's what has been my experience, anyway.
For breakfast, I do oatmeal and eggs (one or two yokes only and the rest egg whites) a lot. I also do protein (Myoplex) shakes regularly. I have to keep a good supply of ready-to-drinks in my cabinets and at work just in case I don't have a meal with me or did not plan adequately to have one (or more than one, actually) pre-made and packed with me in my carry-cooler. What about you? What is your typical breakfast menu like?
Hey Ag12 - Yes, I am a fireman, too! Been a volunteer firefighter for about 17 yrs now...love it!
I really like the original book, too. Working hard to "Eat Clean - Think Clean - Live Clean!" (kind of my mission statement)
Typical b'fast for me is either a small bowl of bran flakes w/ skim milk & some kind of protein (lean ham or turkey). Or oatmeal. Or egg substitutes scrambled w/ some lean ham chopped up in it.
Doing good so far today eating (did sneak in a few Goldfish crackers from the preschool cabinet at the church! Ha!). Did bran flakes for b'fast, a protein AdvantEDGE shake, a protein bar for snack, baked chicken & small baked potato for lunch. What do you think?
Why do you not do protein bars?
Gotta get cardio in sometime this evening. Hopefully not at 10 PM again!!! :)
Preacher_Fireman, It sounds like you're a busy kinda guy, man. I have several jobs (small ones), too. Since my wife stays at home with the kids, I have to in order to provide for our family.
Eating clean is probably the hardest thing to do with regard to this (and probably just about any other) fitness program. If you can do the eating alone, that's probably at least 1/2 of the equation and you'd see some results by even doing that 1/2 of it. That's been my experience, anyway.
When you say bran flakes, is there a certain brand of bran flakes you're eating? I only eat raisin bran and don't know that I have had regular bran flakes. (Oh and I only eat raisin bran on my free day if I eat it, because it typically has some added sugar in with it). Your breakfasts sound similar to mine for the most part. I typically do eggs, oatmeal, maybe a piece of whole wheat (100% wheat and whole wheat is the first ingredient in the nutrients list) toast.
My meals today have been okay. I missed one of them, but the others have been in line with the food list and diet. Your food today looks pretty good to me. Tell me more about those AdvantEDGE shakes, though. Those aren't high in sugar are they? I try to pick up Myoplex everything, but the other day I almost bought some Myoplex bars from Target that had like 26 grams of sugar in them. I had to put them back on the shelf with that much sugar in them! They were also 365 calories each, I believe. My gosh! EAS used to have "Body-for-Life" on most of the packages that fit the program, but they seem to have yanked this from their products. Oh, and the above is an example of why I try to stay away from bars. Most of them are high in saturated fat, sugar, or both! Very few are low in those things and have enough protein to make them worth their price tag. If you know of any that have all of these characteristics, please let me know what they are so I can order some.
My wife had an event tonight, so I may not be able to get my workout in this evening. I wound up doing my cardio yesterday and need to hit my upper body today. If I don't, I will have to squeeze both cardio and upper body in tomorrow (like I had to do once last week).
Hope you're having a good day!
