Consolidated 5/21 Starters Thread

  • Hey everyone! I am starting today! I would of started Monday, but it's actually easier for me to get to the gym on the weekends then it is during the week. so I thought I would start closer to the weekend. Im a busy mom of four! I have a 7 yr old, a soon to be 6 yr old, and 11 month old twin boys! I also work full time. My life is pretty crazy! My husband works long hours as well so I really have to motivate myself to get to the gym when he gets home later in the evening! I do know that once I get moving it will become easier and easier!

I have done body for life in the past after I had my second child and lost a lot of weight. I know this works. Im excited to get started. The last couple days I spent following my cousin around watching him on the golf course at state golf. I'm out of shape and I can't stand it anymore. So I thank you all for doing this forum. In the past  reading these daily helps a lot. I know there will be days when I just don't want to work out or eat clean and then I'll read these and find the motivation I was lacking!!  SO good luck to everyone!! I'm excited to hear about all the changes!!!!

  • Welcome to the 5/21 club, Linzground! Two 11mo twins ... wow. That's some aerobic exercise right there.

    To all:

I did my cardio and learned another lesson. Tie your writing implement to yourself: basically I hit the numbers right, so no point in posting them, except I came in weak during the minute when I was deciding whether to try and grab a pen off the floor while riding a stationary bike.

I did a quick calculation that if I failed I was going to go crashing onto the lap of the woman cycling next to me, catch an ankle in the pedal-stirrup and break it (the ankle), and tip the bike over, pulling out the electrical cord and probably thereby tripping a breaker to plunge the entire gym into darkness. While I was evaluating these options and putting together the likely chain of events, I think my "8" slipped down to a "7." I did the rest from memory with no problems, though.

  • @ Angie123 - If you look under the Library tab, Nutrition (2nd page), the title labeled - Your First Week of Eating the Body-for-Life way, on the Friday meal plan for the last snack it lists 1 TBSP of Natural Peanut Butter.  It's only listed once during the week though - so I don't think daily is really an option.  I can totally understand though, because I am a peanut butter fan myself.

    Hope that helps.

  • Greetings all!  I finished my C2 5-612 and had intended to jump right back in on 5-7, but I had gotten side tracked.  So, I would like to join here!  I am so ready to really see some results this go around!  I will turn 38 in Nov and 3 kids, husband and full time job have led me to not take care of myself.  I have 30 #'s that have to go!!!!!

Good luck and God bless you all!

    Shannon

  • Useful discovery: my fist displaces almost exactly 1 cup of water. That's convenient to know when measuring yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. No more holding my fist up to the food as if I'm threatening it. Just measure out a cup. (it's a smidgen more than a cup, but close enough)

Welcome, Blessed Mom! Great to have you in the group.

  • I'm so impressed by how well everyone is doing! 4 days into our first week :)

Someone had asked why I don't think I'm getting enough protein - basically, I've been trying to do egg whites for at least one meal, but I really dislike them. And when I make a turkey sandwich, it's hard to get that much protein into it, you know? I'm trying to do this with whole foods as much as possible, but am open to using protein powder. I just haven't found one that doesn't taste horrible...has anyone found a powder they like? I've heard good things about Designer Whey, but the cholesterol is high, and I don't know if I want to worry about that.

Welcome to the few new people joining up this week!

  • Hola all!! Arriba Arriba! (ahem) I'm so not Latin, but I like their language. Fun reading about your guys' progress! Day Four and the feeling of needing a nap hasn't hit yet, a good sign. I can't wait for my metabolism to kick in, I swear Day One was rough! Welcome to our little group linzground & Blessed Mom, all my best to you. I don't know about you guys, but I  could barely walk down stairs after my LBWO, I had to use the hand rail! Even today, sitting down requires some geriatric moves! But I knew going in that the beginning was going to be rough, so I vowed to myself I was just gonna put my head down and muscle through... pun intended. I'm 49, single never married (so no keeds) so instead I partied. Tons of friends, bars, you know the story. My vices were beer & cigarettes, although not a day smoker, and coffee with 1/2&1/2 and sugar. I got up to 238 a couple years ago-- I'm 5'9"-- but discovered a book about sugar so I nixed that and dropped over 40 pounds. Word to the wise-- switch to stevia or any of the sugar alcohols, it doesn't cause the pancreas to produce insulin, which is a VERY good thing. Ask me if you have any questions, I read extensively. Anyway UGH!! quitting the party and stopping drinking coffee is what took me so long to start this but I did it! I broke the cycle and my body is taking to this pretty well. I think the exhaustion on Day One/Two was my liver doing some detoxing, but like I told mythmere, I've dropped FOUR pounds since Monday morning!! Sure water weight, whatever, but I can see it. And... drum roll... I SWEAR I can see the slightest little bump on my tender pecs where the beginning of my awesome chest will bud from Monday's workout! Lol!! And on that note-- OWWW!!! Talk about muscle soreness! It's almost unbearable at moments. I recommend hot showers. I actually can't believe I'm going in tomorrow to hit 'em again! Wth?! So kick butt everyone, it sounds like you're all doing fantastic!! I am personally proud to be counted in your number.

    Some thoughts--

@jopickle-- I wanted to buy Eating For Life! But my ex-girlfriend took me to the grocery store and gave me some phenomenal ideas. So now I go to Barnes & Noble and write down recipes from it. It's an incredible book of menus! Also, the health food store I go to here in L.A. recommended MRM Whey Protein mix, fyi and if you're working out hard, I wouldn't worry too much about cholesterol, exercise reduces it naturally.

@mythmere-- you had me rollin with your scenario of ultimately leaving the gym in darkness!!

@mamamoonbeams--awesome (sung) name!-- I LOVE peanut butter!! It's seriously one of my favorite things, but... I cut it out. At least until Sunday!! Eat it on your free day!

So that's it wrapping up Day 4!! I wish it were Day 44! Oh! Myoplex! NEVER buy it from GNC, they're ridiculously expensive! Go to the EAS website www.eas.com and enter your zip code and it'll tell you where they stock Myoplex stuff. Some places may surprise you, I found it at a Ralph's (grocery store, just in case) and they had meal replacement bars on sale for $1.49 and Myoplex shake packets-- a box of 20 for $30! They wanted $59 at GNC... the thieves.

  • @ jopickle

I think they all taste horrible; what I do is make a shake out of milk, a banana, a strawberry, and the protein powder (the brand name I use is "Pure Protein," but I picked it because it was the cheapest per serving, not for taste or quality). I count the milk and protein as one protein serving, and I squint the banana and strawberry together into one carb serving.

Voila! It tastes like banana-strawberry instead of vanilla protein powder. (or strawberry protein powder). This does not, repeat not, work with chocolate protein powder.

(If you're price conscious, IGNORE the price per ounce in the grocery store and focus on price per serving -- some of these use three times the weight of powder to make one serving as another brand).

  • Gravity kicked my butt today.  Wasn't over pleased with my upper body workout today.  But the nutrition thing is going pretty well.

Picked up Myoplex recovery mix...it taste way better then the Gold Standard I had.  Definately switching.

Too tired to post anymore; time to play with the sandman.  Zzzzzzzzz!!

  • Well, it's day 5 and it seems that we are all doing pretty well. I ordered both the Body for Life and the Eating for Life books off Amazon ($10 for both! Woohoo!) and they came in yesterday so I am very excited to get started with some of the recipes. I also never realized that I was supposed to be working out in the mornings so when school finishes next week, I'm definitely going to make that adjustment.

I'm a little disappointed with my workout last night. I finished three cycles on my cardio, but then got the bright idea that when the phone rang, I should answer it. As you can imagine, that didn't fare too well for my workout, as I finished the rest of my workout at a level 5. Note to self--never answer the phone when working out.

I am loving the nutrition side of this though. I am never hungry anymore, except maybe right before dinner. It's great and I'm starting to have so much more energy already!

Here was my meal plan from yesterday.

    7:30  3 egg-white sandwich on a whole wheat muffin

    9:30  protein shake and grapes

11:30 whole wheat pasta with homemade meat sauce (ground turkey breast--I actually recycled the meatloaf recipe that I got off of the website earlier in the week and put that into my sauce)

2:00 low fat cottage cheese with blueberries

6:30 chicken and rice soup (another recipe off the website--love it!!)

9:30 protein shake and 1/2 handful of almonds (not an approved carb, but I'll work on that for today)

    @jopickle

I haven't found protein powder that doesn't taste horrible either. The only thing I have found that I don't mind so much is the EAS Advantedge Carb Control Shakes. These don't taste too bad and they're only $5 for a 4-pack. Maybe you could try those. :)

Hope everyone has a great day!

  • Well I still have a sick kiddo who doesn't want to be put down (he's almost 16 months), and then he decided to stay awake for 4 1/2 hours in the middle of the night.  Needless to say I did not get my cardio in yesterday, but am all set to go in for my Upper Body as soon as he wakes up.

So I came to the conclusion yesterday that while I'm not doing horrible with my nutrition, I'm not doing great either, so I will be taking a closer look at the recipes on the website, and planning out next week today and tomorrow and just really cracking down on the nutrition!

As for protein powders, my husband's work put in a fitness center at their work and brought in a couple of different trainers and a nutritionist to work with those interested.  The nutritionist shared with him the info. on the protein and multi-vitamins that she uses, so now he only gets our stuff (both powder and multi-vitamins) off of  bodybuilding.com.  The two we currently have in the house are Rocky Road and Banana Cream.  They are pretty good.  Better than most he's had me try over the years.  I do the same thing as Mythmere though and usually mix my protein into a smoothie - makes it much more palatable, and it's easy to do and the kids can have some too.

@ Mythmere - why do you think mixing chocolate protein with fruit does not work?

@ luv2teach - I also find I don't mind the EAS Advantage Carb Control Shakes, and definitely like their price, compared to some of the other EAS products.

@ KO - so the Recovery Mix - I gather that is for after a workout?  What is its purpose?  This is where I don't know what I should be taking or adding to what I'm already doing (which is really just protein powder and the EAS shakes).

  • Morning all!!!!   I slipped off the old wagon last night:(  I was rocking some clean eating all day yesterday, and my dad-gum husband brought home pizza and movies last night.  I will admit it WAS good, but I am swollen from the sodium today and when I logged my nutritional info in, I decided it wasn't THAT good!  I leave for Pensacola 3 wks from tomorrow, so I've got some buckling down to do!!!!!

I don't know if any of y'all have heard of Herbalife products before, but those are the shakes that I use.  I mix the vanilla shakes w/ some of the powdered peanut butter and 1/2 tsp of sugar free cookies and cream pudding.  WOW, they are excellent!!!

I didn't get to entertain the livestock during my walk/run yesterday.  I had to take my son to baseball practice and it's an hr and 15 mins from my house:(  The things we do for those little folks!  But he's not little anymore.  15 and 6'.  You should see me fussing at him.  I'm 5'4 and I have to look up to him.  I'm sure he's scared!  lol

Good luck all!  I hope everyone's weekend is clean and productive:)

  • Just in case y'all think I've flipped my lid about my "entertaining livestock" bit,  I had posted on another thread yesterday and thought it was this one.  I live in rural America.  LOVE IT.  I walk and run down a dirt road.  If you can imagine, there are cow pastures on both sides.  My daughter rides the 4 wheeler while I run/walk.  Well, I was trying my best to do HIIT training while I walked.  I ran for 1 1/2 miles.  The next mile I would walk for 1 min and then the next min, I would do anything that was high intensity and kicked my boo-tay, like high steps, football runs, jumping jacks, etc.  My daughter and her little friend were giggling at me and the cows were definitely staring.  But you know what?  I had fun and worked my tail off.  The last mile, .75 miles, I walked "normal" b/c there are houses and I didn't want to scare people!  lol

  • I"m joining this group as well...I am 27 yrs old and weigh 272lbs. I am diabetic and I need to get my life and health back on track. I will complete this personal challenge. Glad to have found a group that started this week.

  • ---KO---

im sure you can...i used to put in my shakes.

Once or twice a day...just keep in mind its going to be extra calories.
