Q: I want to follow the Body-for-LIFE weight-training program, but I’m afraid that if I start lifting weights that I will get big. Is this true?
A: No! This is a common myth that we see all the time. During your strength workouts you will burn calories and gain muscle, which will help speed up your metabolism. Make sure you lift heavy enough weights so your muscles fatigue between eight and 12 reps. If you lift lighter weights, you won’t develop enough muscle to make a noticeable difference. But, don’t worry, moderately heavy weights will not make you look bigger! Remember, as you build muscle you will have more endurance when you hike, run, bike, etc. And muscle is heavier than fat so it takes up less space, meaning that when you start to develop muscle your clothes will fit better.
