As a child, I always knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be a wife and mom - Supermom to be exact. I had a grand vision of what motherhood would be like and I couldn’t wait to grow up and live out my perfect motherhood fantasy. This vision of mine did not include me being overweight, out of shape, physically and mentally exhausted much of the time, and addicted to sugar. I never dreamed I would stick my kids in front of the TV so I could take naps, bribe them with candy bars, and count the hours until bedtime everyday. No, this was not the vision I had in mind. But sadly, it had become reality.
My husband has a physically demanding job and he works a lot of crazy hours. He also has a time-consuming hobby, and he travels some as well. With two energetic boys and an often absent husband, I became so overwhelmed with the enormity of motherhood that I quit nurturing my own needs. I ate my feelings away, packed on the pounds, and became lazy and unhappy. The turning point for me was when I was hospitalized for colitis. My doctor told me if I didn’t change my eating habits, my condition could get much worse.
I learned about the Body-for-LIFE® program a few years prior to my diagnosis. In fact, I had started the Challenge a few times in the past but I didn’t stay on course and I was not consistent. Fortunately, I discovered that there is a huge Body-for-LIFE® community online, and once I committed to joining my online team, my life changed for the better. My teammates offer me enormous support, advice, tough love, and inspiration. We share training tips, recipes, workout triumphs, pay-it-forward stories, and lots of laughs. But most of all, we offer eachother encouragement. One of my teammates is 2009 Body-for-LIFE® Champion Michelle Simpson. When I learned her whole story, and saw how her consistency with the Body-for-LIFE® program changed her life, that inspired me to commit fully to a 12-week challenge no matter what. If I made a mistake, or missed a workout, I vowed to forgive myself and continue on…no re-starts, and NO QUITTING!
Consistency and my “no matter what” attitude paid off! I surpassed my goal of losing 20 pounds and lost 22. I went from a size 12 to a size 6, and lost 13% body fat. People can’t believe it when I tell them I eat 6 meals a day and that I can do the workouts at home. I’m finally percolating! Soon I will be running my first 5K race, in the fall I’ll be doing a 15K race and following that I’ll do a second Body-for-LIFE® Challenge. I know I can achieve any goal I set for myself, and that is empowering.
Life as a stay-at-home Supermom is so much sweeter than life as a couch potato. I feel like I have given my children the greatest gift I could ever give them – a healthy, happy, hands-on mom…and THAT is the mom I had dreamed of becoming.
