I want to shout from the rooftops to all Mommies and Daddies, “do this challenge today!” As a wife and a mother of a one and three year old, I had accepted the role of taking care of everyone else. If there was time at the end of the day (of which there is none) then I could have some “Steffany Time!” When I first started the challenge, taking time to think about what I was putting into my body, and setting aside time to exercise, I couldn’t help but feel completely guilty. I had told myself I was neglecting my kids and it wasn’t worth it. At one point, I told another mother the guilt I was having for actually taking time out for myself. She enlightened me (she has 5 kids). She told me “if you neglect yourself, you will not be able to be the best mommy you can be!” So I took her advice and ran with it, literally!
Every morning when my kiddos woke, I got their milk and breakfast, turned on the cartoons, and hopped on the treadmill. WOW! What a way to start the day, by 7am I had already got in 40 minutes of cardio, hello energy! The next step was signing the kids up for our gym’s childcare. This was a hard step to take, as no one but Grandma’s have watched my babies. After a little convincing from the hubby, we got them in there, and started lifting weights together 4 times a week.
Throughout the Challenge I had several people notice my changing physique and ask what I was doing. It has brought so much joy to share Eating for Life recipes and snacks with my family, friends and clients.
The full 12 weeks were not all a breeze. I had a set back, and completely cheated for 5 days. I felt depressed and didn’t want to leave the house. I was cranky, irritable and had no energy. It was then I realized that this had to a permanent lifestyle change.
At the end of the 12 weeks I had truly learned what my friend was telling me about being a good mommy. If you do not take care of yourself, and teach your children to be healthy and active, you are not being the best Mommy you can be. I want to inspire parents everywhere to not only do this for yourselves—do this for your kids and family!
